The Problem...
Health care in Sub-Saharan Africa is now in serious decline with many Africans expecting to live only until their late thirties. This has been caused by AIDS, TB, malaria and non-communicable disease. During this time, actual spending on health care has decreased with frequently only 5-10 dollars being available per head per year. Recent campaigns on debt relief call for increased aid to Africa. Proposals include increased investment in health care, teaching and research.
Care
Africa urgently needs help to cope with the increasing burden of disease.
Education
Medical training is one of the most cost-effective forms of developments in health care. However there are great shortages in teachers, schools, classrooms, equipment and textbooks.
Research
Health related research is vital to Africa’s future. Research needs to be good quality, low cost, appropriate, locally determined, linked to patient needs and carried out in local centres of excellence.
The Proposal...
Aim
Strengthen and support local capacity in health care, teaching and research over a 5-year period at KCMC in Northern Tanzania.
Strategy
To develop methodologies and teaching materials appropriate to Africa in the main areas of health care, teaching and research and integrate them into existing curriculum.
